Molinico Loco, Macabeo

The wine is pale lemon in the glass with intense aromas of pear, green apple and citrus on the nose. On the palate, the wine is soft and juicy, with fresh acidity in balance with delicate yet distinctive fruit flavours.
Molino Loco is made by the Castaño family in Yecla and takes its name from the windmill ('molino') that sits on the edge of the vineyards where they produce their fruit. In contrast to other windmills, which turn in windy conditions, this particular windmill is "loco", the Spanish for crazy, as it turns only on calm, still days.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, with vines planted in trellises using irrigation. The clay soils here mean that the roots of the vines must grow deep into the earth in their search for minerals and nutrients. This root depth helps to ensure healthy, ripe and flavoursome grapes from vineyards over 18 years old.
The 2019 vintage produced smaller yields than previous vintages due to wet and windy conditions during flowering. However, overall it was warm and dry with lower than average rainfall and an early summer heatwave resulting in low levels of vineyard disease. When it did rain, it was sufficient to allow vine development to continue steadily and the fruit ripened evenly, resulting in an extended harvest period.
The grapes were crushed and destemmed before pressing. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 15ºC for 15-16 days to preserve the natural fruit purity and freshness that is so typical of the Molino Loco style.
